In researching Abebooks, I found more than a dozen copies of Hilton's 'Senora Sketch Book' offered for sale with prices ranging from $19 to $50. Several were signed by the author. It is safe to conclude the book is common. My research also revealed there was a second printing of the first edition and a reprint done by Best West Publications in 1966. Value rests with the first edition, first printing.

I've had just a real nice time reading through it. I don't believe it is emotionally possible for a bad mood to survive a few pages of 'simple pleasures.' They are broken down by subject. Heading up the top ten biographies is a biography that was recently a movie. That, along with the great admiration the man has earned, makes the Man in Black, a biography of Johnny Cash, number one. Number two, however, surprises me: Forty-Seven Years in the Universalist Ministry by Daniel Bragg Clayton. I don't know the book, but it's a surprising subject for such success. Other subjects of top ten biographies include Charlie Russell (western artist), Marilyn (last name not necessary), and a Mafia hit man. Number 8 is My 60 Memorable Games by Bobby Fischer, the chess genius and repulsive human who talks like Mel Gibson drunk when he's sober. Most of the most sought after books change from year to year, bur riding atop the Arts and Music category for the fifth straight year is...are you ready for this?...Sex by Madonna. I doubt that this has much to do with either art or music, and probably not a lot to do with sex either, but Madonna is Madonna, which is better than having the top art book be something by Paris Hilton.

After reading a recent economics paper from the University of California at Berkeley's Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley graduate and BookFinder.com founder Anirvan Chatterjee, based on the research in the paper, decided to make an across-the-board change to his e-commerce site. Rather than listing only the price of products, the site now lists the total price of products with shipping and handling charges figured in. The change has led to a general if slight increase in conversion rates, Chatterjee tells Internet Retailer...The early data indicates varied impacts across different retailers on BookFinder.com. 'One mid-sized retailer on our platform saw incoming customer clicks decline by 25% but sales jump by 50%. Another retailer, one with atypically high shipping rates, saw conversion increase by 50% but overall sales decline by a third,' Chatterjee reports. 'In general, conversion rates have been slightly higher; we've found that having better data upfront means customers are less indecisive. And increased transparency definitely favors retailers with shipping costs in line with industry averages.' The company made the change in part because of what it sees as a larger e-commerce industry move to reconsider the role of shipping prices. In June, for example, eBay announced it would start cracking down on sellers who charge excessive shipping prices.

Congratulations are in order to the multi-site book search engine BookFinder.com for attempting to present real prices, that is, ones that include shipping costs. This is an imperfect process, and not of great importance if you buy a Gutenberg Bible where shipping will be an insignificant part of the cost. Ten years ago, there would have been virtually no way for me to discover 'Our Mr. Dormer.' There's no copy in the Chicago Public Library, it's out of print and Mottram was never a big seller in the U.S. from all I can tell. But, recently, I was able to track down a copy -- a well-preserved first edition by Mottram's British publisher Chatto & Windus -- for about $8 (including shipping) by searching in several of the extensive new and used book Web sites. Oddly, the fourth most searched for book last year was The Principles of Knitting, written in 1988 by June Hiatt. Does it contain the secrets of Fatima amid its plain and purl instructions? We're not sure why and think it might be better not to know.

Web sites? I've got a few. First, unless you get a time machine and hop back to 1996, you won't be too impressed with the Web site design over at BookFinder.com. It's a great place to find rare and out-of-print books and has a central search engine that boasts access to 100 million tomes listed by 100,000-plus booksellers (skewed toward the rare and out-of-print stuff), but it's not very stylish. It actually cheers me up to see it, partly because it lets visitors get right down to the business of searching for a particular book and partly because I look at that page and think--as a person who was rejected from the art world back in Grade 3--'Wow. Compared to that, I feel like Leonardo de Monet!' (I was also booted out of art-history class.) BookFinder.com has been open since 1996; perhaps the executives decided that updating the database engine driving things behind the scenes was a bigger priority than adding spinning graphics, Javascript doohickeys, Flashy animations, or, I don't know, a sixth colour. Score one for efficiency over aesthetics.
